Sydney has been the inspiration for some of UNSW’s graduating built environment students, whose work is showcased in the exhibition, LuminoCity, opening tonight at UNSW's Kensington campus.

Leading architects, planners and academics will be part of a debate on whether Sydney can continue to grow while remaining one of the world's most "liveable" cities?

LuminoCity is the largest exhibition of its type in Australia. Student work from each of the disciplines – including architecture, interior architecture, planning and industrial design – will be on display for students, family, friends and the industry to view.

A digital light projection and accompanying live dance performance will be held on the opening night and other evenings throughout the exhibition.

The event is also the launch of the Faculty of Built Environment’s two new schools: the Australian Graduate School of Urbanism (AGSU) and the Australian School of Architecture and Design (ASA+D)*.

A series of associated events will be held as part of the exhibition, including a tour of Sydney’s architectural highlights, an alumni reunion and an opportunity for children to work alongside architects and architecture students to build their own imaginary bridge.

Some of the student work on display includes:

  • A proposed extension to the ANZAC Memorial in Hyde Park on the eve of the 100th anniversary of the landing at Gallipoli in 2015
  • A proposed student design hub located along the Wynyard section of George Street. It would be a place for creative design and research in the heart of the city.
  • A recreational facility in Wollemi National Park, NSW
