UNSW is the first Australian university to partner with the Higher Education Commission (HEC) to provide PhD scholarships to talented young researchers.

Under the five-year agreement, UNSW will train 75 Pakistani PhD students who will return to their home institutions to help develop the research base needed for a strong, knowledge-based economy.

UNSW is investing $9 million to ensure the success of the agreement, which was signed recently in Pakistan by UNSW’s Pro-Vice Chancellor Fiona Docherty.

The key areas of focus for doctoral study cover the social sciences, medicine, mathematics, earth and marine sciences, irrigation and city and regional planning.

To date, the HEC has funded 50 Pakistani doctoral scholars to study in Australia – 21 have returned to Pakistan after completing their PhDs and 29 are currently studying.
