Want to know which degree is right for you? Keen to learn about potential career options? Interested in scholarships or overseas study?

All these questions and more will be answered at the UNSW Open Day this Saturday, September 1 – one of the biggest dates on the University calendar and packed with events and lectures across all the faculties.

Thousands of potential students and their families are expected to visit and enjoy more than 300 activities including augmented reality experiences, mechatronic sumobots, flight simulators and a quicksand-like pool.

But more than anything, the Open Day is a great opportunity to get a feel for the vibrant UNSW community and see the University’s world-class facilities in action.

“Current staff and students will be on hand to answer questions about the best degree program for you, give information about Guaranteed Entry and alternative pathways, and explain how to apply for scholarships and exchange programs,” explains Jonathon Strauss, director of Future Students and Marketing at UNSW.

“There will be so much to see and do across the University, so don’t forget to download the UNSW Open Day 2018 app, for a successful, informative and fun day.”

UNSW Open Day 2018 highlights include:

Luminocity 2018: A must-see student led exhibition for anyone passionate about Shaping Future Cities. Future students will be inspired by the real-world projects Built Environment students have brought to life using models, imagery and virtual reality elements. There’s also hands-on activities running all day in the Design Futures Lab.

Getting hands-on with art and design: Future students can explore our innovative Art & Design studios at the UNSW Paddington campus and ask current students and staff about their inspiring work. Studio spaces are equipped for a range of disciplines, including ceramics, digital media, painting and drawing, photo media, textiles and more.

Hear from an astronomy and space expert: For those interested in the varied career opportunities a science degree offers, students can hear from Professor Lisa Harvey-Smith, the award-winning astrophysicist with a talent for making the secrets of the universe accessible to all. Discover how she built a successful career as an astrophysicist, author, speaker and TV presenter.

In addition, future students and their families can:

  • Fly a plane in a purpose-built flight simulator and try on virtual reality goggles at the Aviation marquee.
  • Start ‘thinking globally’ at the Arts & Social Sciences precinct where there will be a life-size snow globe.
  • Find opportunities to launch their career and pick up duty free merchandise at the Business School’s Frequent Flyer Club.
  • Challenge themselves to make their way across the surface of Engineering’s viscoelastic pool without sinking. The more force applied the more solid the liquid will become, so the key is to never stand still.

  • Get some hands-on experience in arm plastering and ask Medicine students about their experience studying at UNSW.
  • See demonstrations from the UNSW Mechatronics Society’s Sumobots – the miniaturised fighting robots demonstrating how learning about engineering and entrepreneurship can go beyond the lecture halls and into the real world.
  • Check out the bionic eye, a major project within the Graduate School of Biomedical Engineering aiming to improve the vision of people with a degenerative eye disease.
  • Get a feel for what it would be like to be a lawyer at one of UNSW Law’s mooting demonstrations.
