Learning foundational engineering concepts requires one-on-one guidance, which isn’t always easy to offer online. But a new MOOC at UNSW is making high-quality courses accessible to learners of all backgrounds.

One of the developers of the course, Professor Gangadhara Prusty, from the School of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering, says the use of real-life simulations and personalised materials in the courses has contributed to a significant reduction in student failure rates from 31 per cent to 7 per cent, and a two-fold increase in the number of students achieving high marks in foundational mechanics courses in engineering.

“Through this MOOC, we’re able to help convey our own passion for engineering mechanics to students, and engage them in new and exciting ways,” says Professor Prusty.
