The Minister for Communications, Malcolm Turnbull, will join the new UNSW Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ian Jacobs, for a public event next week exploring how best to manage risk in life, politics, business, climate change and medicine.

Professor Herbert Huppert, a distinguished geophysicist at the University of Cambridge and UNSW, and Sam Mostyn, President of the Australian Council for International Development, will also be members of the panel discussion and audience Q&A.

The event, to be held at UNSW on Thursday evening 26 March, will be hosted by Robyn Williams, the presenter of ABC radio's Science Show.

Professor Huppert says that people make decisions and take risks at every stage of their lives.

"Sometimes we evaluate risks on rational, quantitative grounds; more frequently we rely on intuition that is possibly incorrect. Yet the choices people make can have big implications for their careers, health, finances and even the future of the planet,” says Professor Huppert, who is a Fellow of the Royal Society and a Professor in the UNSW School of Mathematics and Statistics.
