An academic at UNSW's Australian Centre for Cyber Security has become one of only 35 people in the world to achieve the highest and most recognised information security qualification.

A UNSW Canberra academic at the Australian Centre for Cyber Security has become one of only 35 people in the world to achieve the highest and most recognised information security qualification.
Dr Gideon Creech is now a Cyber Guardian, the elite title bestowed by the System Administration, Networking, and Security Institute (SANS) which has a reputation for being the most trusted and by far the largest source for information security training and security certification in the world. The institute has issued 86,000 such certifications to computer professionals, of which only 35 are Guardians.
To gain the Guardian qualification an applicant first has to pass four separate certification courses on specific areas of computer security then pass a two-day exam in the US covering the full spectrum of cyber attack and defence.
Creech said: “The whole process had taken me five years on top of various demanding day jobs, but I am excited and honoured to join this elite group.” In March 2017 he will commence teaching the first Bitcoin and Fintech Security course offered in Australia.
“We are thrilled to have a world leading instructor with Dr Creech’s level of experience and recognition to take our courses to the next level of academic and practical expertise,” says Professor Jill Slay, Director of the Australian Centre for Cyber Security.
Previously Creech spent 16 years as a naval officer and graduated top of his cohort as a Principal Warfare Officer. He earned honours and masters degrees in engineering, an MBA, and a PhD in Computer Science. His PhD was in intrusion detection and exploit payload technology, resulting in the design of the most accurate host-based IDS algorithm in the world at the time.
