Economics student and Sydney Swans midfielder Daniel Hannebery has had a double win: topping his first year at university and winning the 2010 AFL Rising Star Award, which recognises talented young players.

He was the unanimous choice for the Ron Evans Medal, receiving the maximum 45 votes from the selection panel.

Since enrolling in an economics degree at UNSW's Australian School of Business, Dan has been supported by the Elite Athletes and Performers Program. The program offers flexible study options for athletes to combine their sporting and academic pursuits. A range of sports scholarships is also offered.

Hannebery, 19, learnt how to balance his studies and professional sport early in his career. After being recruited by the Swans, Dan stayed in Melbourne to finish high school. He completed his VCE while playing the last seven games of the 2009 season.
