Cast your vote for UNSW’s 3 Minute Thesis champion

UNSW’s 3 Minute Thesis (3MT) competition champion, Sharon Savage, will compete on the world stage against 26 fellow PhD candidates in the Universitas 21 virtual grand final.

Entrants from U21 member universities will submit a video presentation, which will be made available online on Friday, 11 October and open for voting for the People’s Choice award.

The Judge’s Choice prize is a US$2,500 bursary for the winner to use towards further research or career development at a U21 university of their choice.

Savage won the UNSW 3MT competition in September for a presentation on her research that shows it is possible to improve the vocabulary of people with dementia in a short time-frame. 

The PhD candidate from UNSW Medicine has proven that if people with dementia use an online tool – which prompts them to recall simple words such as “toaster” for just half an hour a day – they will see improvements in a matter of weeks.

Savage is now using brain imaging techniques to show “how you can influence your brain by working your mind”.

The People’s Choice vote will be open from 11 - 25 October. Both awards will be announced on Tuesday, 29 October.
