Three UNSW students are vying for the title of International Student of the Year for NSW.

UNSW's official nominee is Zimbabwean-born Stephen Chikazaza, 30, a postgraduate student at the College Fine Arts. Also nominated are Telma Joana and Melody Wang, whose names were put forward by external organisations.

They're among 25 finalists in the running for the awards, which recognise services to the state.

Since moving to Australia a year ago, Stephen Chikazaza has demonstrated his community spirit through his involvement in the UNSW Student Representative Council, work as a peer mentor, and through his fundraising efforts for disasters.

Telma Joana, a General Practitioner from Timor-Leste, won an AusAID scholarship to UNSW to study a Master of International Public Health and Health Management. Earlier this year she received a Prime Minister's Pacific-Australia Award.

Melody Wang, 19, a former student of Blakehurst High School, is studying music and education at UNSW. She moved to Sydney from China two years ago.

"It's an unexpected surprise but a reflection of Australia's dedication to international students," says Stephen, who is enrolled in a Master of Integrated Design. "Winning the award would be a great honour for my family and those that have invested in me, especially Student Development International at UNSW."

The winners of the NSW International Student of Year Awards will be announced on Sunday, March 6 as part of the International Student Festival in Sydney.
