Two Australian satellites, feared lost after being deployed from the International Space Station, have been recovered by UNSW engineers after weeks of a fraught, and at times heart-stopping, recovery operation.

UNSW space researchers will be able to improve technology that mitigates satellite navigation interference and make satellites cheaper, thanks to almost $600,000 in new federal funding.

The final space shuttle mission could mark the start of a new era of opportunity in space for Australia, says UNSW's Australian Centre for Space Engineering Research.
