UNSW’s expertise in digital technologies and the design of smarter and more liveable cities will be showcased as part of the Vivid Ideas program.

The Media Architecture Biennale (MAB16) chaired by UNSW Built Environment’s Dr M. Hank Haeusler, will bring together international experts to debate the impact of digital technologies on the urban planning of global cities.

Vivid is billed as the largest tourist event in Sydney and MAB16 is the premier, international media architecture event aimed at strengthening the connections between people and the places they share.

“MAB16 brings together specialists who are passionate about reinventing urban communities and utilising public spaces to communicate,” says Dr Haeusler, director of UNSW’s Computational Design degree.

“The official buzzword and theme for this year’s event is ‘digital placemaking’, the use of digital technology within a dedicated public urban space to specifically communicate with the public.”

Sydney is at a critical moment in its development and engagement with digital innovation – this event is the perfect opportunity to join a future-shaping conversation.

MAB16 speakers include Professor Carlo Ratti, Chair and founder of MIT’s Senseable City Lab; Ethan Kent, Senior Vice President of New York City’s Projects for Public Spaces; Ava Fatah Scheik from The Bartlett Unversity, London and Leni Schwendinger head of ARUP’s Nighttime Design/Global Lighting Urbanist initiative; and Bruce Duyshart, Director of Meld Strategies, who developed the recent Smart City Masterplan for Parramatta.

The Smart Cities International Workshop and Symposium will also be held as part of MAB16, hosted at UNSW's Michael Crouch Innovation Centre.

The Symposium, sponsored by the Australia-Korean Foundation, brings together international keynote speakers from leading smart cities around the world including Korea and Singapore in conversation with local smart cities experts, government and technology start-ups.

Co-convened by UNSW Built Environment’s Dr Scott Hawken and Dr Hoon Han, the Symposium will consider how smart technologies and urban design can enhance the innovative potential of urban spaces, using the future of Sydney’s ‘Silicon Harbour’ and Bays Precinct as case studies.

“Sydney is at a critical moment in its development and engagement with digital innovation – this event is the perfect opportunity to join a future-shaping conversation,” says Dr Hawken.

MAB16 will be officially opened by NSW Minister for Planning, Rob Stokes, followed by a keynote address by Vivid Sydney Creative Director, Ignatius Jones.
