Teenage binge drinking among female students has been slashed following a school-based alcohol education campaign developed by UNSW researchers.

While the girls exposed to the CLIMATE Schools: Alcohol Module had dramatic reductions in alcohol consumption, binge drinking and alcohol-related harms; the results were not so good for boys.

For males, the program was no more effective in changing alcohol use than the standard alcohol prevention education currently being delivered in the control group.

The research has suggested it may be necessary to focus on the negative sexual effects of alcohol, such as erectile dysfunction, to achieve success.

The module was developed and trialled by the National Drug and Alcohol Research Centre (NDARC) at UNSW.
