Five UNSW teams will be hoping their startup businesses stoke imaginations and open pockets when they pitch to Australia’s largest angel investing syndicate, Sydney Angels, on 13 March.

The teams, made up of current and former UNSW students, are working with investment coach Clive Mayhew in preparation for the pitching session, which offers real-world investment opportunities.

Mayhew, a seasoned entrepreneur, investor and chair of education technology startup OpenLearning, took up the coaching role with UNSW Innovations in January.

“We have five very interesting companies … all of which are approaching investment ready with some very bright, driven founders,” says Mayhew.

As well as the unique partnership with Sydney Angels, UNSW Innovations provides a range of programs for current students and alumni to develop their entrepreneurship skills and startup ideas.

This includes networking events, pitching competitions, industry sponsored innovation programs and skills development workshops.

Joshua Flannery, Manager, Student Entrepreneur Development, says it is exciting to see UNSW's top startup founders pitch to the Sydney Angels group, which has been supporting UNSW's entrepreneurship programs since they began almost five years ago.

"Now that our programs have matured, so has the quality of the startups we are producing so I look forward to seeing some real deals being made,” he says.

The five startups selected to pitch at the Sydney Angels event are: KeyHub, a smart key exchange program; Austern International, a career boot-camp for millennials; Tot-Tok, a platform to support early childhood educators, parents and children; Share with Oscar, a mobile app for residents and private businesses to rent out their car spaces; and Beam Energy Labs, providing low-cost and reliable energy systems off the grid.
