Gendered violence and restorative justice
Does restorative justice offer advantages to victims of sexual assault and domestic violence over conventional justice practices?

Can alternative justice practices that involve the affected parties seeking to repair the harm caused by crime have a role in Australia's legal response to gendered violence, including sexual assault, intimate partner homicide and domestic violence?
Professor of criminology, Julie Stubbs, examines the promise and potential problems of using restorative justice in responding to gendered violence in a free public lecture this Friday 15 April.
Restorative justice has been adopted internationally in different settings. In Australia, it has mostly been used in juvenile justice but is now being used with adult offenders in the NSW forum sentencing program. It can offer advantages to victims of crime over conventional justice practices: victims take an active role in the process, while offenders are encouraged to take responsibility for their actions.
The lecture is an initiative of UNSW Law as part of its year-long celebrations and special events to mark the faculty's 40th anniversary.

Professor Julie Stubbs has published widely on legal responses to gendered violence. She is an adviser to VicHealth on violence against women, and previously advised the Victorian Law Reform Commission on its references on defences to homicide and sexual assault. Her collaborative research provided the basis for an innovative program undertaken by Queensland Legal Aid to provide services to Filipino women who were victims of domestic violence. She has served as a member of the NSW Advisory Panel on Domestic and Family Homicides, the Criminal Justice Sexual Assault Taskforce, and the Department of Corrective Services Institutional Ethics Committee. She has undertaken consultancy research for Legal Aid NSW and several criminal justice agencies. Her research interests also include bail, young offenders, and cross-cultural issues in criminal justice. Professor Stubbs is a past director of the Institute of Criminology and was formerly a senior researcher with the NSW Bureau of Crime Statistics and Research.
