Scientia Professor Ross Buckley has been appointed to a new Chair in International Finance and Regulation to drive research into systemic responses to global financial insecurity.
Leading international law firm, King & Wood Mallesons, sponsored the establishment of the Chair in partnership with the Centre for International Finance and Regulation (CIFR), hosted by UNSW Law.
The relationship makes King & Wood Mallesons (KWM) the sole legal partner of CIFR, joining its other industry partners Macquarie Group, Commonwealth Bank and KPMG.
Professor Buckley is a world-class thought leader on financial governance. He won the only Australian Research Council Discovery Outstanding Researcher Award in law this year for a project looking at systemic responses to global financial instability.
The high-impact research of the Chair will have practical policy application via CIFR’s extensive engagement with finance sector industry participants, industry associations, government, and regulatory agencies in Australia and the Asia-Pacific.
"This sponsorship by King & Wood Mallesons and the partnership with CIFR demonstrates a rare and exciting breadth of vision. It shows King & Wood Mallesons is not merely interested in doing an excellent job of applying the law, but is looking to shape law and policy, here and in our region," Professor Buckley said.
UNSW Law Dean Professor David Dixon said the sponsorship offers unique opportunities for students to develop specialist international finance law skills.
“Students will be able to work one-on-one with Professor Buckley, one of the world’s leading experts in international financial regulation, in a program that confirms UNSW as a global player in the research and teaching of commercial law.”
CIFR’s Chairman Peter Mason said: “We are delighted to welcome KWM to the CIFR consortium which now features a leading firm from each of the legal, accounting, investment banking and retail banking sectors. A common denominator of our industry partners is their depth of expertise and strong Australian and international activities.
"These firms are ideal partners in our mission to conduct high quality, in-depth and timely research into the pressing issues in financial services regulation, risk management, investor protection and international integration for the purposes of best practice policy recommendations.”
