Professor Chris Styles has been appointed Dean of the Australian School of Business at UNSW, Vice-Chancellor Fred Hilmer announced today.

Professor Styles is currently Deputy Dean of ASB and Director of the Australian Graduate School of Management (AGSM).

He will replace Professor Geoffrey Garrett, who has been appointed Dean of the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania. Professor Garrett will take up the position on 1 July 2014.

Professor Hilmer has congratulated both Professor Styles and Professor Garrett on their appointments.

“I am confident that Chris will be an outstanding leader, further cementing ASB’s position as Australia’s pre-eminent business school,” Professor Hilmer said.

“And while I am disappointed that UNSW is to lose someone of Geoff’s talent and capacity, I believe it’s a great reflection on this university that one of the world’s top business schools has selected its next Dean from our academic ranks.”

Professor Garrett has been Dean of ASB since early 2013. In announcing his appointment today to Wharton, President of the University of Pennsylvania Amy Gutmann said it was the result of a global search to find a successor to Wharton’s current Dean, Tom Robertson. She described Professor Garrett as a distinguished political economist with unique experience in international business and business education.

Professor Styles was appointed to his current position at UNSW in 2011. He was previously Associate Dean (Management Education) at the University of Sydney Business School and held a range of other academic leadership roles. Prior to Sydney, he was Associate Professor of Marketing at UNSW’s then Faculty of Commerce and Economics. He has extensive international experience as an academic and as a business consultant and is widely recognised for his expertise in international marketing and entrepreneurship.
