At the University of New South Wales we encourage an ethos of questioning and debate amongst our students and staff.
Recent media reports claiming that a UNSW teaching resource about Indigenous terminology is an attempt to rewrite history or to enforce a politically correct vocabulary are simply wrong.
The guide, adapted from a 1996 document, illustrates what is regarded as more appropriate or less appropriate language, using a range of examples. Contrary to what was implied, the terminology guide is not a compulsory part of the curriculum and it does not mandate what students can and cannot say. Teachers can choose to use it as a resource for their classes.
The suggestion that such a guide would stifle open debate is not justified. The intention is the opposite – to promote informed debate.
The University is committed to giving all of our students a positive and inclusive learning experience. Respecting and learning about Indigenous knowledge is part of that commitment.
