UNSW will join the Australian Human Rights Commission’s "Racism. It Stops With Me" campaign with a launch celebrating the University’s diversity on Wednesday 20 August.
The 'Racism. It Stops With Me @UNSW' launch has a celebrity line up of guests.
Race Discrimination Commissioner Dr Tim Soutphommasane will give a guest lecture on the insidious nature of contemporary racism and how to combat it.
MC Jeremy Fernandez from ABC TV was a victim of what he describes as a "Rosa Parks" moment of racist abuse on Sydney transport last year. Fernandez will officiate the formal proceedings.
Sam McCool, a comedian brought to fame by Australia’s Got Talent will perform excerpts from his hit standup show "Embracism" in a lively comic exploration of multicultural identities.
The "Racism. It Stops With Me @UNSW" message urges students and staff to take responsibility and challenge prejudicial assumptions by taking bystander action against discrimination and abuse.
More than 40% of UNSW’s 50,000 students speak languages other than English at home and some 130 nations are represented in the international student population.
As one of the Asia Pacific region’s leading research universities, UNSW is committed to respect, reciprocity and trust and to maintaining a safe and tolerant environment on its campuses.
The campaign will ask students and staff to report incidents of racism and promote awareness to challenge their assumptions.
