His brilliant career

Scientia Professor Stuart Wenham, Director of UNSW's ARC Photovoltaics Centre of Excellence, has been awarded one of the most distinguished accolades in solar cell research, the William R. Cherry Award.

The Cherry Award recognises outstanding contributions by scientists and engineers in the field of photovoltaic energy conversion, both to the science and technology of photovoltaics and the dissemination of new findings by publications and public presentations.

Professor Wenham was chosen as the 2009 recipient for a body of research spanning three decades at UNSW which has included major advances in photovoltaics such as the development of the buried contact solar cell and thin-film Crystalline Silicon On Glass technology.

Professor Wenham, who received the award at the 34th IEEE Photovoltaic Specialists Conference in Philadelphia in the United States in June, said his work in solar technology was motivated by a desire to see it taken up worldwide.

"My interest and research in photovoltaic technology has always been based on enabling widespread global adoption of solar energy as a clean, durable and affordable solution," he said.

"I am honoured to accept this award and to be recognised among the inspiring scientists and supporters who are bringing solar PV to the forefront of global energy and environmental action."

Dr Zhengrong Shi, a UNSW photovoltaics graduate and chairman of major Chinese solar panel manufacturer Suntech Power, paid tribute to Professor Wenham, who is the Chief Technical Officer of Suntech.

"The distinguished William R. Cherry award honours Dr Wenham's important contributions to PV industry knowledge and progress through a celebrated career spanning three decades. His breakthrough achievements have advanced our industry standards and are highly regarded by experts around the world," Dr Shi said.
