UNSW Chancellor David Gonski's "extraordinary leadership" in philanthropy has been recognised with a major award from the Business/Higher Education Round Table.

One of Australia's most prominent business leaders, Mr Gonski received the 2009 award for 'Outstanding Philanthropic Support of Higher Education', having "demonstrated extraordinary leadership in philanthropy especially in relation to the establishment of the Centre for Social Impact".

The award citation noted that the Chancellor's "energy and drive in encouraging philanthropy in others is unsurpassed".

Mr Gonski is also Chairman of the UNSW Foundation Board of Directors.

Highly commended in the same category was Michael Crouch, a long-time supporter of the Australian School of Business at UNSW. His involvement began more than a decade ago as an advisory board member and he is now the ASB's largest donor supporting the establishment of the Centre for Innovation and Entrepreneurship.

"David and Michael are both very worthy of their awards and it is a fitting acknowledgement of their tremendous contributions to philanthropy in Australia and the higher education sector," said Jennifer Bott, Chief Executive of the UNSW Foundation, who accepted the awards on their behalf at a ceremony in Melbourne.

The Business/Higher Education Round Table is a not-for-profit organisation established in 1990 to strengthen the relationship between business and higher education.
