Claims by online hacker group LulzSec that it has obtained passwords for email addresses at The University of New South Wales (UNSW) are incorrect.

The Director of IT at UNSW, Michael Kirby-Lewis, said there had been no breaches of network security at the University.

Mr Kirby-Lewis said only one current UNSW email address was included in the group's list but the associated password was incorrect.

"The password cited by LulzSec is not a valid password for any UNSW staff or student, " Mr Kirby-Lewis said.

"We want to reassure our staff and students that the integrity of their University accounts, including email, has not been compromised. We will continue to monitor the situation."
