UNSW Law student Natalie Karam has won a Prime Minister’s Australia Asia Award, receiving up to $53,000 to study and undertake an internship in Asia.

Natalie will be based in Hong Kong for two semesters, studying politics and law courses to gain further knowledge of international commercial arbitration and Chinese law.

"I am absolutely delighted about winning the award, and very flattered to be considered worthy of it,” said Natalie, who is studying for a combined Jurisprudence/Law degree.

“I have had a great time at UNSW, from studying in the Faculty of Law, to being involved with UNSW’s student association, Arc, and making wonderful friendships. I am looking forward to experiencing Hong Kong and getting involved with student life over there,” she said.

Following her exchange, Natalie will undertake an internship with either a non-government organisation or regulatory body.

Natalie says her plans for the award were inspired by attending the UNSW Shanghai Summer School program at Jiao Tong University in China.

She hopes to undertake courses in Mandarin and Cantonese while living in Hong Kong and to travel around Asia.

Natalie is one of 20 Australian undergraduate students to receive the award, which aims to develop internationally-aware, skilled future leaders.

In other awards announced by the Federal Government, UNSW PhD candidates Laura Crommelin and Eric Chow, and postdoctoral researchers Adrian Camilleri and Peter Nugas won Endeavour Research Fellowships. The Fellowships provide financial support for postgraduate students and postdoctoral fellows to undertake short-term research towards a Masters, PhD or postdoctoral research.
