Australia is experiencing a surge in gonorrhoea and syphilis infections and a dramatic rise in hepatitis C-related deaths, according to an annual surveillance report from UNSW's Kirby Institute.

There has been an alarming jump in some STI infections, with rates of Chlamydia up 17 percent and gonorrhoea rising 25 percent, new national surveillance figures show.

UNSW researchers have developed a new national strategy aimed at eliminating syphilis and reducing other sexually transmitted infections and blood-borne viruses in Indigenous communities.
