They are the engine room of our research effort. UNSW PhD students are making their mark - attracting the attention of both industry and academia here and overseas.

In the latest issue of Uniken, we profile a selection of the next generation of research stars.

There are currently 2,850 doctoral candidates studying at UNSW. Numbers are strong across all disciplines, with the bulk of students enrolled in engineering, science and medicine.

"To be part of a breakthrough, to commit yourself to solving a problem through postgraduate research can be really satisfying," says Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Research Strategy) and Dean of Graduate Research, Professor Margaret Harding.

"Most of the big current issues, both nationally and internationally, such as solar cell technology, climate change, HIV/AIDS, social justice and public policy, are multidisciplinary. Solutions to these problems are addressed by teams of researchers, and PhD students are an integral part of that mix," she says.

Also in the September/October issue, we go behind the scenes of the new Australian film Balibo, with consulting historian and ADFA academic Dr Clinton Fernandes; we hear about an online role-playing initiative so realistic that ASIO needs to be kept in the loop; and find out how indigenous artists in the Papunya community are being supported by a unique partnership with the College of Fine Arts.
