Shanil Samarakoon, a Masters student in Marketing at the Australian School of Business, is leading a team that is bringing electricity to a small rural community in Sri Lanka.

Shanil has teamed up with eight other students from the University of New South Wales to help 24 families from the village of Kirigalpotha set up a renewable, sustainable energy source.

Through the Empower project the students plan to install two biogas digesters and generators. Biogas units generate fuel from organic waste material such as straw and compost.

Once the communities have an electricity supply the students plan to use their business and marketing skills to help the community create new business opportunities and improve existing ones.
