UNSW has been crowned overall champions in the 2016 Eastern University Games, held from 3-7 July in Wollongong, the first time the University has achieved the honour.

More than 300 UNSW students competed in the four-day regional sporting competition, which saw more than 3000 students from 15 universities take part in 19 different sporting events.

UNSW claimed five gold medals, six silver medals and five bronze medals. With two other universities also achieving five gold medals, UNSW won the overall competition with a higher number of silver and bronze medals.

The teams were supported by 27 team managers, 27 students from the Elite Athlete Program and two team captains. There was also drama: An eastern low caused wet weather disruptions during a thrilling win for UNSW’s mixed Oztag team and high winds added excitement to ultimate frisbee and golf.

UNSW's table tennis and indoor cricket teams dominated the field throughout the competition to claim gold and the surfing team achieved both gold and silver for longboard, as well as silver for shortboard in the University Surfing Championships on the Gold Coast.

“This fantastic achievement is a combination of the managers and teams buying into the UNSW spirit and team culture, as well as the staff who have helped build positive values and behaviour around Australian University Sport,” ArcSport Unigames Coordinator Hagan Butler said.

ArcSport's attention will now be on Snow UniGames in August and Australian UniGames in September.

All the staff at ArcSport would like to thank the students who were part of Eastern University Games in making the event memorable in achieving a fantastic result through representing UNSW and their sport.
